NASHVILLE (AP) — The next hit country songwriter could be a guy who was once the best pitcher in baseball. The Nashville Tennessean says Barry Zito plans to finish his run with the Nashville Sounds minor league baseball team and stay in Nashville to write songs. Zito acknowledges his intent with the team was to work back into the majors, but now he wants to write music. Zito says he does not want to be a performer as much as a collaborator with great writers. Zito’s parents and sister are musicians, and he has taken a guitar on team road trips since 1999.
